The Devil’s Work

OTX, a marketing research company that conducts online test screenings for studios, is now offering a new script assessment service. Will this be done by using actual human beings to evaluate whether characters are emotionally compelling, whether their motivations seem genuine, whether the plot hangs together or seems contrived, whether there are surprising but believable twists – will it hell!

No, the service will “compare a script to other pics in its genre and identify its target demographic and box office potential, as well as potential marketing messages. Creative elements are analyzed and compared with similar pics to suggest how audiences might react to scenes, based on a database of research OTX has assembled over the years. Recommendations are made to address any negatives.”

The future of film?

So if you thought studio-released movies have become overly formulaic, bland and unoriginal, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. A movie where the story unfolds backwards? One that starts with the protagonist floating dead in a swimming pool? A film about an apartheid state in South Africa where the excluded population is made up of aliens? Fuhgeddaboudit. Read more (and weep).
