As a script consultant, Ellin Stein has spent many years helping writers prepare their screenplays for submission to studios, production companies, agents, and directors. An Eye for Talent Among the scripts Ellin has recommended in the course of her career as a story analyst and development executive are Central Station and Welcome to Sarajevo. Her eye for new talent was further evidenced when she screened scripts for the Oscar Moore Screenwriting Contest, where she found one winner and one third-place finalist, both of whom have gone on to scriptwriting careers Our Own Projects - Features – As a producer or script consultant, Ellin has developed feature projects for that were subsequently picked up by Zoetrope, Propaganda Films, and DNA Films, attracting stars of the caliber of Denzel Washington and Jessica Lange.
- Shorts – Ellin’s own shorts have won awards from the Toronto, Chicago, and Hiroshima film festivals and from the American Film Institute, as well as being shown at numerous other festivals including the Montreal Festival of Women’s Films and the Santarem (Portugal) Environmental Film Festival.
- Theater – Ellin has co-written five plays with music (which she now realizes were actually pantos for grown-ups) that were produced in New York at the Theater for the New City and Club 57 and in San Francisco at the Eureka, Julian, and Intersection Theaters.
- Journalism - A former theater critic for the San Francisco Chronicle and European Correspondent for InStyle, Ellin has written on films and the film industry for publications including The New York Times, The Times (UK), The Independent (UK), American Film, People, the Village Voice, and Variety’s VLife, and is the author of a cultural history on the National Lampoon, Saturday Night Live, and the rise of satire in 70s mainstream media. She has also contributed film reviews to BBC Radio 4’s Front Row (link to audio).
- Non-fiction scripts – Ellin’s non-narrative scripts include training videos for clients such as Bell Labs (ask her about sinusoidal holding tones!), radio programs for Fortune Magazine, and award ceremonies for the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers.
