| What's the Australian for 'dumped'? |
|
And even as a cartoon Robert Downey Jr makes off with yet another movie
I saw Look Both Ways (which several of us persisted in calling Don't Look Now) the other day. A winner of several awards in its native Australia as well as a Discovery Award at the 2005 Toronto FF, it's sort of a Down Under version of Crash, only sweeter (occasionally bordering on the twee) and more concerned with everyday losses and victories than with making An Important Statement about Racism Today. Also the cars are a lot older and funkier, with not a SUV to be seen. You can tell the film was directed by a woman (Sarah Watt) because, refreshingly, our heroine (Justine Clark) looks like an actual person, just sort of realistically pleasant as opposed to like a movie star who's put on a few pounds in an attempt to look ordinary, while our hero (Wiliam McInnes) - well, let's just say the ladies in the audience approved. Not that he's just eye-candy, but his soulful performance is accompanied by a body that suggests many years spent on a surfboard. Also, I learned that the Australian for "are you dumping me?" or "are you breaking up with me?" is "are you giving me the flick?" as if the dumpee were a pesky insect.
